English as a medium of instruction (EMI) in emerging contexts: needs, goals, and implementation

Dr. Viviana Cortes, Professor of Applied Linguistics at Georgia State University. This presentation will focus on the use of English as a medium of instruction (EMI) in higher education. We will first look at the origins of EMI and how it has evolved in Europe and Asia. Later, we will focus on emerging contexts like Mexico and Brazil, which are starting to consider using English to teach disciplinary content. The presentation will show the results of case studies that focus on the analysis of the language needs of students and faculty in these academic contexts.
